My 7 yr old child had a steel door hit her in the face she had 2 upper centrals chipped and 2 lower centrals chipped/broken she had to have 2 root canals on the lower centrals, she has also had post and core done but she needs braces to make additional room for the crowns besides the room how long should they last ? Is it possible they can last her entire life if not what whould be the next phase of treatment would it be implants if so how much would they be can you tell me in percentage wise 0% to 100% being the probability that shewould need the implants at some phase in her life

Answer: Longevity of dental treatment

By

Like most everything else, nothing lasts forever.  Dentistry is not an exact science and cannot be guarenteed, nor predicted.  At seven years old your daughter has a lot of growing to do.  If crowns are being placed now to protect the non-vital teeth, she will most likely have them replaced at least one to two times in her lifetime.  There is no way to predict if she will ever need implants on the lower centrals. The dentist performing the root canals on the lower did their best to clean out the damaged nerve tissue and seal those teeth, however that does not mean in the future they won't become infected and need to be retreated or removed.  As far as the upper teeth, depending on the trauma from the accident, those two teeth may need further treatment, such as root canals in the future.  Sometimes it may take years before an issue arises, if any at all.   Continue to take her for her check ups bi-annually and always have those teeth radiographed to monitor them.  Keep her oral hygiene as pristine as possible to increase the longevity of the restorations placed. They could last years and she may never experience issues as an adult, however there is always a chance with such a traumatic impact to the still developing teeth.
