Wow do I get a crown fixed that was made too small?

I have a crown on the left lower molar. It was placed about two months ago. I did not have a temporary crown placed first. the day the DDS put the permanent crown in he said that I would probably have a problem with food getting stuck between the crown and the molar behind it. Today i went in to have it checked because iwas having gum pain at the location of the crown and food was getting stuck on both sides of the crown. He advised me to start antibiotics and to go see the periodontist. In addition, he said he would need to put a filling on the healthy tooth next to it to stop food from being stuck there. My concern is multilevel. why would the DDS not have the crown remade correctly and replace it instead of performing an invasive procedure on a healthy tooth. Shouldn't a crown that was made off of a mold of my mouth, if done correctly, fit without large gaps. Why am I having to incur reparative costs when apparently the lab did not do their job correctly. It is bad enough that I have to deal with infections and pain.

Answer: Crown Thats Too Small

The dentist should have placed a temporary on the tooth, it not only protects the exposed tooth from the harsh environment of the mouth, but also prevents the tooth from too much shifting. Before the tooth was made the contact points in front of and behind the tooth should have been checked with floss, and if there was enough space for food impaction, it should have been remade. I would advise returning to the office with your concerns and if it is not resolved (with a new crown) call your dental insurance company and file a complaint. You should not have to cut into a healthy tooth to place a restoration, nor incur charges at a periodontist. It needs to be fixed or the periodontal issues it has created will continue to get worse. However, give the dentist a chance to fix the crown properly without placing a restoration on a healthy tooth first. Many times if you voice your concern they will listen to you and try to make you happy.
