Problems within days with dental bonding cracking or chipping...Is this normal?

I went to a new dentist 2 weeks ago. They did a great job on cleaning my teeth. I went again last week to have a small filling placed behind tooth #7. While there I elected to have teeth #8 and #9 bonded to close a gap between my two teeth. The bonding looked unnatural. The line between my teeth was crooked and I still had a gap at the top. Later that night the bonding between my front teeth broke out. I called the office and they had me go back the next day with another dentist. She did a beautiful job with my bonding. They looked very natural and I was very pleased. Plus for the inconvenience they also gave me a free teeth whitening. Well its been 2 days since I had my bonding done and the corner of the bonding on tooth #9 is cracked. It hasn't fallen off yet but it feels funny and there is a visible crack across the bottom outer quarter of it. I called and made yet another appointment. My question is.... Is this common? I was told that bonding can last anywhere from 3-10 years if it is taken care of. I don't want to be going back to the dentist every few days or few weeks to have this yet again repaired. I have been cutting up all my food or breaking it into small bite-sized pieces and chewing with only my back teeth. My sister had her teeth bonded and has had them for 9 years and never had this issue. I am at a loss. Is it me? Is it the dentist? Or could I be doing something wrong?

Answer: cracked/chipped dental bonding

It is very difficult to close a space between the front teeth with composite resin, and match it perfectly. Composite resin only comes in certain shades and often layering and blending is required. Your situation is not normal, however it is not uncommon either. When a dentist is faced with closing a diastema (gap) between the front teeth, they try to be as minimally invasive as possible. This means, they try not to remove any unnecessary tooth structure. The problem with this is, it is hard to bond a large amount of composite resin without a strong bonding area. Unfortunately, they may need to remove more of your tooth structure to allow the composite to have a larger bonding surface. This situation is not a result of what you are doing, sounds like you are being very cautious. When you return, speak with the dentist and share your concerns. You may need to place porcelain restorations that cover the tooth and close the space, such as veneers.
