Root Canal & Crown

I had a crown back in September following a trip to dentist for pain and sensitivity in a back molar. I was concerned I needed a root canal. He wanted to just do a crown, which of course sounded like a better option to me at the time. I had consistent discomfort after seating the temporary crown, and again expressed my concern about needed a root canal. He said that wasn’t uncommon with a temporary crown, so we proceeded with the permanent crown. I have continued to have sensitivity on this tooth since then. When I asked about this, he said it could take up to five months for it to settle and be patient! Well, it is now getting progressively worse, and is sensitive to hot, cold, pressure, everything. My guess is I’m going to need a root canal (shocker), but now I have a permanent crown on that tooth. My question is whether this is a usual approach, or should I go to a different dentist? Thank you!

Answer: you may need a root canal

I would suggest to go and see another dentist for a free consultation. From the sounds of your discomfort, hot and cold, usually means that the nerve in the tooth is dying. Most dentist will be able to do the root canal with the crown on, so you would not need a new crown.

If you find another dentist, you should request your file from the dentist that did your crown and the new dentist will then know what was done and why.

Good Luck
