First go for an orthodontic evaluation. You may be able to get an appliance called the herbst appliance. This can be used in some cases if it is not that severe. If the orthodontist does not think this is an option then you may be looking at surgery. You will first need braces to align you teeth and midlines. After this your orthodontist will refer you to an oral surgeon for the surgery while you are still in braces. They need to use the wires and brackets as an anchor to hold your jaw in place after having it done. You will go to you orthodontist after the surgery. They will then continue to make final touches on your teeth and make sure your jaw is stable. The surgery is done while you are alseep or will not remember it. You break you jaw and sometimes take a piece out to align it where you need it. You then will have little wires placed attached to your wires and brackets closing your mouth a bit to allow your jaw to heal. These are not in for very long. You will have slight bruising but not much and it should be a little discomfort. They are then removed as mentioned before and final touches are made on making everything stable and aligned in your mouth. You will need to check your dental insurance to see if they cover dental surgery and what the out of pocket will be. This is a separate charge other then your orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist will normally take an xray and send it with you to the oral surgeon so they do not have to take another one. The results are worth it!
