Why Am I Getting Braces Off So Early?

Hi, Im 14 years of age and I got my braces last December of 2012 my orthodontist gave me chain and rubber bands ( elastics ) I have to wear one on each side during the day and double at night most of my friends have braces and are getting their rubber bands right before they get their braces off why am I getting them so early? Also my top teeth of my braces are straight but my bottoms braces are not why is that? If I have chain on the bottom too?

Answer: elastics

Hello! There is never a wrong time to have to start wearing elastics. Some orthodontist will have you wear them early in treatment to make adjustments on your bite early. You may not need to wear them through out the entire treatment. They may have you stop and continue again at the end of treatment like your friends. You also may have a more complicated case that your jaw and bite  needs to be corrected more. You have to give it time for your teeth to get straight. Your lower teeth may have been more out of align then the top making it take longer to move them. Your orthodontist may still do adjustment  to your upper teeth and you are just unaware of it. The chain or power chain elastic is used to close spaces in an arch. You may have it on top because you had spacing that needs to be closed. After your lower teeth are aligned properly you may also need the power chain on the lower arch. Power chain can also be used to rotate some teeth or create space for others if needed. Be patient.

Answer: orthodontic elastics

Not everyone is the same keep in mind. You may have had a shorter treatment plan needed then your friends or you may have more of a severe bite to correct. This can mean being in elastics even from the beginning of your treatment.  It takes time to correct your bite and if they have you wearing double at night this sounds like you have more of a correction to be made. Not everyone that has braces needs elastics and some may only need it towards the end like your friends, to correct minor things. The power chain elastic normally is to close spaces and to keep things close together. You may have had slight spaces or large on the top and power chains can correct it. If you did not have spacing or things to move more to one side or the other on the bottom you may only have or need single elastics ties.  Your lower arch may have more to correct as in aligning things then your top. This can cause your lower teeth to not seem straight and your top teeth are. It will take time.
