Fillings Gum Line
"I have some grooves at the gum line on several teeth. I can feel the groove with my finger nail. I read that they may be treated with a composite filling. They are very close to the gum line. Do they really require a filling? Can I avoid fillings? What is the cause of the receding gum line?"

Age, the wrong brushing technique or toothbrush, and our bite can all contribute to gingival recession. Sometimes when it is significant enough, small composite restorations can be placed to not only protect the exposed dentin, but also to prevent tooth decay in that area. It is not required and not everyone with recession will be a candidate for a composite restoration, however if it is recommended by your dentist, it is a good idea to cover the exposed area. The area exposed is not covered with the protective layer of enamel and can decay rapidly. Be sure you are using the correct brushing technique (modified bass is a popular one) a soft toothbrush, and that your occlusion (bite) is not the cause. While you cannot repair the gingiva without a tissue graft, you can prevent it from getting worse.
