foul bacterial odor from loose crown
Went to dentist today about loose all porcelain crown over a root canaled tooth. Xray showed no decay, bone loss or fractures. If there's no decay, why is there a only recent, bad bacterial odor at the gum/crown margin? My oral hygeine is excellent, gums are healthy, no bleeding. Dentist not worried. Wants to recement it on in a few days after it loosens more on it's own. Can there be odor but no decay?

The odor you are smelling is from the anaerobic bacteria that is present under the crown. Even though you have pristine oral hygiene, there are microscopic bacteria present in the mouth. These bacteria are present under your loose crown and produce gases, the odor you are smelling. When the crown is removed and cleaned, the new cement will reseal the crown and bacteria will no longer be able to get under the crown. This will stop the presence of the odor around the crown margin and within your mouth.
