My tooth moved from trauma, and I have a few questions.

4 days ago my tooth front top tooth was knocked back a little bit when playing basketball. I was able to move it back into almost the same place it was before. I was wondering if I should still have tooth pain or if this was not normal, the tooth doesn't wiggle at all and isn't loose. I also was wondering what the chances were that I will have a "dead tooth" and when I would expect to see discoloration.

Answer: Trauma to tooth

It was a very good idea to try and reposition the tooth, however you still need to seek professional attention. The ligaments surrounding your tooth will tighten within about 48-72 hours and start to reattach to the tooth. Depending on the severity of the dislocation, the nerve could possibly become necrotic and a root canal will need to be performed. Because it is not in the exact location, you could be experiencing hyper occlusion, which can cause further trauma to the tooth and result in discomfort as well. If the tooth becomes necrotic (dead) you could possibly see the color change, there is no way to tell IF or when this will happen. Dentistry is not an exact science, that is why it is important you make an appointment to see a dentist right away and have a dental radiograph taken to determine the extent of the movement, as well as to ensure the tooth is not fractured.
