Old root canal

On May 2009 I had a root canal done on one of my upper molars in WA. Recently I had a cleaning and X rays, and I was told that in the X rays it seems that root canal did not go to the end and there is a dark spot at the end. They think it is an infection and I should have another root canal and the crown it has might break. It is a lot of money and I wonder if it is necessary after 2 years without problems, pain or swelling. Also should I wait or have done it as soon as possible? Thank you so much.

Answer: The root canal was not completly filled

As the dentist mentioned that there is a dark spot on the x-ray at the end of the root of the tooth. That usually tells me that the root canal was NOT filled completly with the root. It is possible that you now have a infection.

I would suggest that you get the root canal fix, they can usually do it thru the crown, therefore you will not need a new crown, unless it is not fitting properly.

I would not wait for pain or swelling as that will cause more problems and the dentist will not be able to work on you as you will have a infection and any numbing will not take.

Good Luck
