I have had an underbite for as long as I can remember, however didn't know it was a problem until in my 20's. My jaw started to give me pain and I developed a TMJ disorder. I met with several orthos and surgerons and settled on 2 that I became very close with. I had braces on for 12 months, surgery, and then braces 6 more months. Now I am in bonded retainer on bottom and a removalbe one up top.
