About elastics

I'm an adult that had self ligating braces for crowding (quoted 18month for treatment & they were off at 13months). I didn't wear my elastics 24/7 for the entire treatment, but my teeth still moved fast. I started off wearing them that way, but then my cheeks would get very raw/painful. So I stopped wearing them during the day & just wore them when I went to sleep or sometimes would forget all together missed a few months (I'm a full time single mom, that works full time & school part time- always had a ton of things on my mind & busy- plus during treatment my parents were in the midst possible divorce). So that's why I would often forget to put on my elastics or take the bag with me. My ortho never asked if I wore them or noticed (mostly b/c I'm an adult and was paying a lot for the braces he assumed I was following directions & would say that my teeth were looking great & moving fast.

I got my braces off earlier than expect- except the day they came off my face became uneven (one cheekbone is high/fuller than the other- my left side with the fuller cheekbone is higher than the right) and develop TMJ. Is this because I didn't wear my elastics enough? I thought everything was fine when I had the braces on & didn't really know what the rubber bands were doing (now I know b/c I've been reading about it). I didn't realize then how important the elastics were to braces. When my ortho said everything was looking great, I thought what I was doing was ok. Can putting braces back on fix my uneven face? I know the Damon braces claim to give higher cheekbones & more symmetrical appearance. I'm just not sure why my face became very asymmetrical. Could my bite to jaw alignment be off? How can it be fixed without doing surgery.
