I don't know who did your teeth. Usually a orthodontist,  but there a few dentist do it too.  If you have your retainer still and it still fits, you should still be wearing them at least at night when you sleep especially if you wore it full time the first year you had your braces off. The other alternative is to get the permenant wire behind your teeth. This way you don't have to worry about not wearing the removable retainer nor loosing them. If your retainer does not fit, it is possible that they can make minor adjustment on the wire on the retainer. If not, you can get new ones or put a permenant wire. Once you had your braces off, your gum tissues are very soft and it takes a good year to strenthen them. That is why you must wear your retainer full time for the first year. Everybody is different but I recommend 2 years. Otherwise all the work to move your teeth will go back within time. When having permanent retainer we try to leave it on for as long as possible. Cleaning your teeth will require that you get floss threader in order to floss between the teeth. The permenant retainer will be inside the 6 front teeth. Canine to canine.
