Appropriate age for braces

My daughter is 13. Her dentist is recommending braces but she is extremely reluctant. What I don't want to do is to commit to braces and then run the risk of her teeth changing again as she becomes more of an adult? What are the chances of teeth changing again after braces at this early teenage stage?

Answer: When most adults teeth are erupted ages 9-14

By

Most orthodontist usually starts treatment when most of the adult teeth are erupted. There is no set age to start any orthodontic treatment. The most common age is 11-14 but orthodontic treatment is for all ages. I have personally put on braces on a patient who are over 55 years of age. As you mentioned, your daughter is 13 years of age and I presume she has most of her adult teeth. This is a good age for her, as when we do orthodontic treatment it is easier to move the teeth into the correct alignment as her gum tissues are soft. They older we get it is harder to move the teeth which only means longer treatment time.  As long as your daughter completes the orthodontic treatment and is given a retainer( to hold the teeth in place) there should be no problem in her adult life that her teeth will shift.   You should let her know that when getting braces on for the first time it is painless. The wire on the braces does all the moving of the teeth.   Good Luck
