Bumper Hinge
We have a nine year old daughter that was referred to an Orthodontist over a year ago. The Orthodontist took pictures of my daughters mouth and said that her bite wasn\\\'t lined up and that she needed a \\\"Bumper Hinge\\\" to adjust her lower jaw to be moved forward to catch up with her top bite. The dentist said she would have to wear it a year. My daughter has worn this religiously and has gone in about every 6-8 wks to get it adjusted, etc. Well it\\\'s been over a year and nothing in her mouth has moved! Her lower teeth look like they sit directly under the top teeth and that they really shouldn\\\'t be extended, because then she\\\'ll have an underbite. I was told by another orthodontists that the child is still growing and that it\\\'s impossible for the jaw to be moved by such a thing as a Bumper Hinge. I\\\'ve spent $2,000 on this hinge and my insurance has paid $1,000. This Orthodontist has also said that more than likely she will need braces. She has 4 or 5 teeth that are fused to the bone and will need to be pulled, but they want to wait. I think that once all her teeth come in that she probably won\\\'t need braces because the space between her front teeth will probably grow together with the other teeth coming in. Could you please give me some advice on this... I really do need a second or third opinion on the matter. My daughter is getting discouraged and they really seem to be hurting her with these adjustment, pushing the metal hinges that the bumper hinge connects into in the back of her teeth into her gums. I appreciate any input. Thanks for your time.

Answer: get a second consultation before doing anything

I truly beleive in bumper hinge, as they do help your daughter lower jaw grow to catch up with her upper jaw. We cannot tell you how long it will take as everybody body is different when it comes to development. It is possible that she will not need braces after, but most of the time she will need them just to line up the teeth to correct position. Tell her to keep up the good work and ask the orthodontist to show you the first pictures you have of her before the work was done. She should see the difference in her profile. It should be more aligned with her face. Please get another consultation with a differnt orthodontist before putting braces on.
Good Luck
