Can I Claim My Daughters Dental Braces Expenses?
2 years ago my daughter was refered to an orthodontist in Northwood (Dr Konviser)since then she had to have root canal done on two of her teeth, this went wrong and she was in pain so I took her to another dentist who said the root canal had an infection, he said she could go to a dentist in Kenton, Middlesex and be put to sleep so she did not have to go through the pain on root canal again, we stayed with this dentist, he refered her to an orthodontist in Uxbridge Burr Hall, Uxbridge. The first orthodontist was free this one is costing me £1,800 odd I am a single parent and I am on working tax credit, can I claim any or all of this money back? Also how can one orthodontist not charge and this one is? So far I have paid approx £700, which I can ill afford.

Answer: Orthodontic expenses
By
Orthodontic and dental expenses fall under medical expenses and in the United States ( you will need to check the tax laws of other countries) can be claimed if the total expenses is more than $1500.00 in out of pocket expenses. To receive a tax benefit you must qualify under your specific tax bracket. Your individual tax bracket depends on your filing status, number of dependents, income, etc. It is best to have all the dental and medical providers give you a printed statement showing your total payments and bring those documents to your tax preparer. Each state may also have individual tax benefits that can be determined if your state requires a state tax return to be filed as well.
Different providers charge for different services. It is the providers discretion what the amount is and what services require payment. If you find a provider you like and agree with the charges, it is best to continue treatment there, rather than start over. Each provider may charge separate start up and/or transfer fees.
