Can I request to keep my braces on longer?
My dentist originally told me that my braces will need to be on for at least 3 years, and I paid upfront for the equipment and labor. Now my dentist says that my jaw is really not moving the way he'd hoped (I am an adult, too old) and will be taking them off a year early. I am worried that my teeth will not be as straight as they could be if they were kept on for the full three years, but I am also wondering if I am entitled to any refund for the money that I paid. I have never had braces before, I am unsure of how it all works. Thank you.

There is no age limit for orthodontics. I have assisted patients in their eighties with successful orthodontic treatment. Ask to speak to the orthodontist regarding your treatment and what goals have changed. Evaluate your original goals, do you want them straight or is your bite the bigger concern. You need to be happy with your goals as long as they are realistic. Orthodontics is priced upon the treatment, not the length. Sometimes teeth move faster and sometimes they move slower than expected. Addressing your concerns with your orthodontist should be first. If you are not satisfied, seek a second opinion from another orthodontist. This does not mean you will start treatment over, but it should answer your questions if your ideal outcome is attainable.
