Missing First Molar

Can my overbite be corrected with a missing first molar?

So I have been under orthodontic treatment for a year now for a mild over bite and crowding issues. I recently had to have tooth number 19 pulled due to a bad infection which originally had a molar band on it. I also just had a bone graft with the extraction, and will be pursuing an implant. My question is can my overbite still be corrected without the molar band on that side? Are there other ways , because my orthodontist has not said what we will do etc, and I am just wondering.

Answer: Class I occlusion

By Sarah h
Dental Professional

Class I or "normal" occlusion is defined as: when the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar is aligned with the buccal groove of the mandibular first molar. The mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar is aligned with the buccal groove of the mandibular first molar.  Since your first molar was removed, your orthodontist can no longer use this relationship.  However, they can use your canine relationship as a backup.  Class I canine relationship is determined with the maxillary canine occludes with the distal half of the mandibular canine and the mesial half of the mandibular premolar. More thann likely, your orthodontist has determined not only your occlusal relationship but your skeletel reslationship as well.  This will allow he/she to continue with your treatment as prescribed prior to the tooth being removed.
