Didnt wear my retainer - what now?

Hi, about 3 years ago i had braces put in and i was very pleased with the results after the 2 year period, so pleased in fact that i refused to wear my retainer, i was so stupid thinking that it would be OK and now my teeth are going back. and in the upper teeth there was a gap and its coming again .. i'm really sad I have found my retainer and put it in, its extremely painful at the moment but i am willing to do this if it means my teeth will be straight again, but my question is... i have gone at least a year without my retainer so will wearing it now still give me a chance or is it too late? and how long will i need to wear it for so they are permanently straight? what is the steps to get them back and is there a way to reduce that hurt ?

Answer: get new retainers to fit

By

Now you know that wearing retainers is very important especially after you got your braces removed. After wearing braces for 2=3 years and all the moving of the teeth, your gums are very soft and it takes about one year after wearing braces for your gums to firm up again. That is why its so important to wear retainers. I know there are 2 types of retainers that you can get. The one you have is the removable retainer in which you take it in and out. Also there is the kind where it is bonded on the inside of the six teeth on top and bottom( canine to canine). This way you don't have to worry about wearing the removable or loosing it. It is possible that you can get new retainers and have the orthodontist make bends on the wire to fix up your problem. Or you may have to get braces again, it depends how much your teeth had shifted. Your teeth will be sore again as we have to move the teeth again. But as you know the pain does not last forever. It is never too late to correct anything.  Make sure if you get them straighten again WEAR the retainers or get the bonded permanent retainers.   Go for it to make up all the hard work you did to get that perfect smile.
