Do I Really Need To Wear My Transparent Retainer?

Hello. I wore dental braces to correct crowding and a slight jaw angle for about three years. I have had them off for about two years now. At the time of removal, I was given a permanent wire retainer which sits behind my top and bottom jaw, as well as a transparent retainer (fully covers top and bottom jaw and gums) to wear at night. Although the permanent retainer does not bother me, the transparent one results in significant pain, trouble swallowing saliva, and gum irritation, resulting in an overall unpleasant night sleep. Is this retainer really necessary, since I have a permanent one? Thank you.

Answer: Dual Retainers - Interesting

By BracesInfo.com Expert 10

Your orthodontist/dentist must really be concerned with your teeth shifting.   It is highly recommended that you stick to his plan of retention for you.   There have been to many cases of patients not wearing retainers properly and they had to get braces again, sometimes even for a 3rd time.  My suggestion is to put them in right before you are about to fall alseep.  So keep them in your night stand and wash them in the morning after you take them out and then place them again on your night stand.  Retention is just as important as the main part of your treatment.   I'm sure your teeth and smile are beautiful.   Best to you.
