It is typical for an orthodontist to deliver a set of retainers after completing braces. You should wear top and bottom essix if that is what was given to you. You should only need to wear them at night time unless prescribed differently by your orthodontist. Make sure you wear them or your teeth can have the chance for shifting. This will result in having to possibly get braces in the future again because once you go to put the retainers in they may not fit correctly. Sometimes, there is a chance you may not need to or are asked not to wear both at the same time. This may be if your bite is opening because of having both retainers in at the same time . They may ask you to discontinue the wear of the lower one for awhile to see if the bite will settle again. Is does not happen often but there is always a chance. If this is not happening to you please do wear them both every night.
