My 9 year old lost her premolar and 1/2 of the root is still in her gums.

My 9 year old lost her premolar last night and we realized that her new tooth broke half of the root off of her premolar and is now growing out the side of her gums and pushing the tooth in front of it out. It is obvious she is going to need braces, but the half off of the root that was broken off is still in her gums and is shoved in between the new molar that is coming in awkward and the premolar behind it. My question is- is this a dental emergency or can it wait until Monday? She isn't complaining of pain at all, but the tooth that fell out is decayed and had a cavity. (Her dad and I have been divorced for five years and he has physical custody of her most of the time. He has neglected taking her to the dentist the entire time so I finally just barely got dental insurance.)I had her try to pull the root out, but it wouldn't budge. So, I had her rinse her mouth with mouth wash and brush and floss her teeth again.

Answer: Premolar Eruption

The primary dentition does not contain any premolars, so more than likely, it was not a premolar but rather a primary molar. It could very well be the permanent tooth that is erupting that you are seeing in the mouth, as when primary teeth are exfoliated, the roots are usually dissolved. It is not a true dental emergency and can wait until she is seen by her dentist on Monday unless she experiences pain in the next 48-72 hours. She should also stay away from any hard or crunchy foods in order to avoid irritation to the gingival tissues.
