Occlusion change after braces?
I got my braces off in May and was given Esix retainers. I haven't been to my orthodontist since. My retainers cover all my teeth except for my very last molers, both sides, on top and bottom. I've noticed those molers have started to move so now when I have my retainer out, and close my mouth only those 4 molers come together, leaving me with an open bite. Its incredibly uncomfortable and if I have my retainer off for more than 20 minutes or so, my jaw starts to hurt and I get headaches due to the amount of pressure being put on those back teeth. Please help! I asked on a different side and I was told I need to stop wearing my retainer for a week or two to allow my bite to correct, then get a new retainer that covers all the teeth. Is this true? I'm scared going that long without wearing them will cause them to shift too much. Even after a day without them in they feel especially tight and sometimes even hurt to put in. If your retainers are not covering your second molars completely, it could be the cause of the changes to your bite. When wearing your retainers, your teeth are left open in the posterior, allowing for super eruption to occur. Your molars will continue to erupt until they are in occlusion. This could be the reason that your teeth are open in the front but closed in the back. It is best to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist in order to have your bite evaluated. Be sure to bring your retainers to this visit to ensure they are checked and fit properly. When you schedule the appointment, ask if you should discontinue wear until you are seen. The Orthodontist can best advise you.
