Problems after having my teeth straightened

I had my teeth straightened and this was completed over a year ago now, since then I have had a build up of thick saliva on my top front teeth only, so I constantly have to keep clearing it and find myself swallowing all the time even whilst talking. This never happened before the treatment and It’s becoming increasingly frustrating and making me very depressed because the orthodontist who carried out the treatment and my routine dentist does not know why this is happening. I thought it might be the fixed retainer so this was removed but this did not change the situation, the orthodontist recently mentioned it could be because I might be pre-menopausal because saliva can change texture. If this was the case surely it would happen on other areas i.e.: the bottom teeth. Is it possible that it could be the new position that my top teeth have been moved into that is causing the build up of saliva, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Change in Saliva Content

By BracesInfo.com Expert 10

Saliva is a watery substance formed in our mouth and excreted by our salivary glands. It is made up of 99.5% water. The remaining 5% is electrolytes, mucus, white blood cells, epithelial cells, enzymes, and antimicrobial agents. Saliva essentially protects the oral cavity and aids in digestion, however it also maintains the pH in our mouth. It tends to be thicker when stimulated by the sympathetic (respiration) versus the parasympathetic (digestions) nervous system. Our saliva is a good indication of our overall health. Dry mouth usually indicates a health problem or disease. Where as thick saliva could mean you are having a hard time producing saliva which is often the result of an over the counter medication, prescription drug, or stress. Many people with Sjogrens syndrome (dry mouth) complain of thick saliva around their front teeth. Sjogren's is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the cells responsible for producing tears and saliva. Your general doctor or dentist can diagnose and offer you prescription medications or immunosuppressant drugs to help offset the symptoms if needed. However, it is most likely coincidental that your braces were removed and you now noticed the collection of saliva. You are more aware of your mouth and the position of your teeth now that your brackets have been removed.
