Replacing Braces Brackets
I am 46 years of age and have had braces for 9 months. During each adjustment, my dentist removes 2 or 3 brackets and repositions them. I have two questions regarding this: 1. Is this normal or does this imply they were positioned incorrectly in the first place. 2. Before removing the brackets, she asks me to brace myself and has her assistant hold my head. She struggles with the removal and it is very painful and often takes several attempts. This seems very odd to me as I have seen braces removed very easily and painlessly. I also have 2 crowns which I now fear will break based on my experience with how she removes braces. When I ask her, she says I am wrong and removing braces is a very painful process. Please advise! I\'m desperately worried!

Answer: it shouldnt hurt

It is common to reposition the brackets during treatment. They are put on and then throughout the treatment you teeth obviously move. Sometimes it is needed to place them in a new position to help move them in a different way.it really shouldn't take them holding your head to remove a bracket. They should use a bracket remover which pops the bracket off very easy. All you should feel is a little bit of pressure. Perhaps they feel you have anxiety with them in your mouth and take precautions to make it safe for them and you while removing the bracket. I would ask why it takes them to hold your head and several times to get it off. It should only take 2 times if that to pop the bracket off. I would not worry about them breaking a crown when removing the bracket off a crowned tooth. Crowns are made to withstand a lot of pressure. They hold up when you eat hard things so there is little chance it should break when they remove the braces. again I would share the concern with the orthodontist. They are there to make you comfortable throughout your treatment and maybe they need to explain more as to what they are doing or use a different way of removing the bracket if it is painful to you.
