Root resorption with braces

My daughter is almost 13 y.o. and had two lower incisors turned in at angle so teeth touch. Last appointment the hygienst said she couldn’t get the colored band around one and left it off. The left lower incisor started to go behind the right at this appointment so the orthodontist told the hygienist to put a spacer between the teeth. My daughter said this was the most painful event in her life. When we left the orthodontist the space between lower incisors was already apparent. A week later now and pain has subsided, but my daughter asked my to look and it looks like the gums are much lower. Does this mean there is going to be bone loss/gum recession…this happened to my son and his root resorption is now not fixable after his braces are off…different orthodontist. Were the teeth moved too quickly

Answer: rotated teeth

By

Anytime a tooth is completely rotated and then turned back to the proper position, there is a chance of gum recession. Normal gums have a triangle type look to them in between the teeth. When a tooth is turned or rotated the gingiva does not form the same as a normal positioned tooth. It may always seem to be lower then the other teeth around it. This can cause issues when she is older. If the gums continue receeding she ,ay need a graph done later on. Some do and some do not. The roots do have a chance at having resorption happening. If a tooth is again rotated or turned when you turn the tooth it causes the effect of trauma to the tooth as if it were to have been hit. The orthodontist normally takes a pan film before treatment and will take one during treatment and after to monitor the roots of the teeth. They pay special close attention to the ones that are rotated to make sure the roots are ok. You are right it can happen also if the teeth are moved too quickly. In most cases though like mentioned the orthodontist will keep an eye on this knowing this may happen before the treatment is started.
