Seeing non-traditional orthodontists to correct my overjet?
I'm not entirely sure how to ask this question, just as I am not completely certain on how to put this into a category that is provided. I've been looking into what is wrong with my teeth, as it is extremely apparent that my teeth don't align and my upper jaw sticks out much, much farther than my lower jaw. I've been somewhat obsessing over it for weeks now, and have even been trying to physically push my lower jaw forward to see the difference between my profile when relaxed and my profile after I move my lower jaw. The latter, when my lower jaw is moved forward, looks much better and when I do so, my lower and upper teeth align. It looks natural, the crooked teeth and one odd spacing aside. Looking into it, I realize that it is not an overbite that I am suffering from, it is overjet. I'm not entirely sure if my case is very severe, but I'm wondering if this case of overjet is what causes my teeth grinding and speech problems, and/or for my mouth to feel crowded at times and prevent me from speaking properly. I legitimately feel self-conscious about it and wish that it could be fixed. I naturally assumed that I would need lower jaw surgery to fix the problem. That, or possible tooth extraction (I have 15 upper teeth and 13 lower teeth), except I don't want to do that. I don't want to disguise the problem, and I've heard that "traditional" orthodontists commonly do that. Looking into it further, I have discovered that there is such a thing as an appliance that will move my lower jaw forward and keep it in place. Would this appliance, the Herbst appliance, be more suited to actually helping my problem, barring my crooked teeth? If so, how should I go about getting this appliance when it is supposedly very expensive and I am a seventeen year old girl going to college for the first time? Who should I look for to really help me with this problem? Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Please and Thank You!
