Answer: will need new retainer as soon as possible

If you stop wearing your retainer after your braces were removed your teeth will definitley move. Your orthodontist should have told you that it is very important for you to wear the retainer full time for the first year.(except for when eating) Your gums are very soft from all the work they did to move your teeth to the right places. It takes about one year for your gum to get firm again. It is possible for you to immediatly get a new retainer or adjust your old one so it will fit again. You will have to go back to the orthodontist again for adjustment on the retainer untill the teeth are in the right position. I would suggest that when your teeth are in correct postition, get the permanant retainer that is bonded on the inside of  six teeth upper and lower. With this type of retainer you don't have to worry about not wearing them and or loosing them. In which case, you forgot to wear them( it is very common) so please go and see if you can get yours to fit again or get a new one and wear it until your teeth are corrected again. Once that is done, ask your orthodontist to put a permanant retainer. The permanant retainer is usually left on as long as possible 3 years or so. The only downfault is cleaning your teeth, you have to use a floss threader to clean the front 6 teeth upper and lower. You should be use to that when you had your braces and had to use a floss threader.
