Trimming Teeth To Prevent Overcrowding?

Our dentist has suggested that we have two of our child\'s adult teeth trimmed to make room for two more adult teeth that have not yet come in. He feels this will prevent overcrowding in the future and perhaps save us some orthodontia work. I have never heard of trimming teeth, and we\'re not sure this is a proper practice. Is teeth trimming done frequently, and will it help prevent overcrowding?

Answer: have an orthodontic evaluation

By

My advice is to go have an orthodontist do an evaluation first. I understand your dentist is trying to eliminate this in the future but it sounds like this would give you better anwsers. Personally, I would never recommend just trimming a healthy tooth to make space for additional teeth. Why take a perfectly healthy tooth and remove some of the enamel on the tooth when there are other options. Chances are if they see there already is not enough room for the other permanent teeth there is going to be crowding no matter what. If you go see an orthodontist they may be able to discuss other treatment options for you. Your child may be ready for interceptive orthodontic treatment. This means they still have some baby teeth and have permanent teeth as well. There are things such as expanders that expand the upper and lower jaw allowing to make room for all the permanent teeth to erupt. This normally stays In the mouth for about 6 months. They may also opt to align some teeth after expansion to make even more room for teeth. After all teeth have erupted that are permanent the cold may need what is called phase 2 of braces to align the rest of the teeth. Again chances are if there is already no room.for teeth to erupt you are most likely looking at having some type of orthodontia In the future. It is not going to hurt to have a consult to see what they say. Their advice will probably be the same and not recommend trimming any teeth!!
