Jenna, the first thing they do is clean your teeth with special polish called pumice. It will feel that you have sand all over your mouth. This special polish will make sure there is nothing on your teeth so the glue(bonding material) will stick on your teeth with the braces(bracket on each tooth). Every orthodontist has different ways of putting on your braces, some will put it on each tooth one at a time or have a special tray that fits over all your upper teeth and another one for your lower teeth so all the brackets are put on at once. Once place on your teeth there will be a special lite that hardened the glue(bonding material) on the tooth and teeth. The bracket is a anchor on your tooth and then the wire will be place on the bracket. The wire does all the moving of the teeth. Once the wire is in that is where you get to choose the elastic that holds the wire in place. The elastics will be change at every appointment and do wire adjustment. It does not hurt when getting the braces on BUT when you go home after a couple of hours your teeth may get sore from the wire moving the teeth.  Good luck Jenna
