Most orthodontist will take braces off in one appointment. There are times when the orthodontist will make you come back the same day when braces are off to get the retainers. It all depends on the orthodontist treatment plan. Once your niece goes to the orthodontist to have her braces removed it is quite simple procedure. If she has bands on her molar teeth, the orthodontist has a special instrument to loosen the band. All the hardware on the braces are usually left on as they begin to loosen all the brackets with also a special instrument. It is painless and all you hear is snapping of the bracket. Once everything is loosen, it all comes out in one piece. Then the orthodontist will proceed to remove all cements and or bonding material left on the teeth. Also a very simple procedure and painless. Once all done, they will take impressions of the upper and lower teeth for final models (before and after) and also to make retainers. There are two types of retainers to get. Removable upper and lower or permanent retainer in which it is bonded on the inside of the upper and lower 6 teeth(canine to canine). It is very important to have the retainer the same day as when the braces are removed the gum tissues are very soft from all the moving of the teeth and it takes a good year to strengthen them. You don't want your teeth to go back to where they were.
