Crown Lengthening Procedure

My dentist advised me to have a crown put on a wisdom tooth because it was cracked and food was getting in there. I went in for the intial work, preparation for temporary crown. I paid $1,169 for the initial work of preparing the area, temporary crown and permanent crown a few weeks after. On the intial visit, the dentist said I had a problem with the gums and he had to use the laser treatment to correct it. At that time I was not advised of the cost to do this. After going back for the permanent crown 4 weeks later, I was told that I owed $895, because of the laser surgery that was performed. So, instead of the original quote of $1,300, minus 10% discount, it is now costing me over $2,200. He explained that the laser takes the place of actual gum surgery, it took about 5 minutes, with 3 to 4 laser beams. I would like to know what the usual charge is for this work, I feel as if I have been mistreated. I am on Social Security, just recently signed up for dental insurance, but there is wait of one year for any oral surgery, crowns, etc.Thank you for your anticipated response. Eileen Bannister

Answer: crown lengthening

Crown lengthening is usually performed when there is not enough tooth structure above the bone level to properly place a crown.  If it is not performed it can lead to periodontal issues and bone loss which can be more costly and painful. The average cost is usually between $450-$600.   If you were not informed prior to the procedure being performed of the cost and did not sign a treatment consent, you cannot be held responsible for the charge.   Even though you have a waiting period on your insurance plan, crown lengthening is considered a periodontal procedure and your insurance has an in network fee that is to be charged.  If the provider is out of network, they are able to charge what they want.  Call your insurance company and inquire the fee that the provider is contracted to charge you. Companies, like Metlife, often include crown lengthening in the crown fee, so there is no additional charges to the patient.  They are not allowed to charge over the insurance fee, even if there is a waiting period.  If you paid with a credit card, you can dispute the charge of the crown lengthening by calling and filing it.
