Gold Veneer Crown Tooth Is Very Sensitive To Temperature

I recently received a gold veneer crown (approx. 8 weeks ago). The tooth is extremely sensitive to temperature (cold and hot), persistent dull pain (especially when I chew on that side), there is a sharp ridge on the outside of the crown, and a constant metallic taste in my mouth. I did not have any of these symptoms prior to the procedure. I went back to have an adjustment and the doctor had concluded that my symptoms were related to anxiety. Coincidentally, the temporary crown caused bleeding sores on my tough & cheek. The temporary had to be adjusted quite a bit. The doctor then claimed I did not bite down correctly during the procedure. I am obviously questioning the quality of the dental care I received. I am reluctant to go back to the same dentist for more corrective procedures and pay more money on a tooth that has already drained the bank. I am also concerned that another adjustment will effect the integrity of the gold veneer. What can I do?

Answer: Gold veneer sensitivity

Many times teeth can be sensitive especially after a newly placed metal restoration.  This is usually a sign of reversible pulpitis.  It normally will subside on its own within a few weeks, however because your are having a few other symptoms as well, it is best to seek a second opinion if you do not feel comfortable returning to the previous office.  It sounds like your bite could very well be out of occlusion. This would explain the pain on biting as well as the heightened temperature sensitivity.  If you continue to hit this tooth first when biting it can create a larger problem which affects the nerve known as, irreversible pulpitis.  This condition is then treated with a root canal.  As far as the metallic taste, this could be a result of a reaction to the metal or a leak in the crown margin.  Crowns are not made of 100% gold as they would be too soft to withstand the biting forces.  Usually there is a small  amount of platinum and palladium in the high noble metal crowns as well.  Your body may have a reaction to these metals, however it is usually unlikely.  These metals are usually  very compatible with our tissues. The sharp ridge could be a piece of cement that was not properly removed or it could just simply need to be polished.  Either one is a simple fix.  You should definitely seek the opinion of another dentist as soon as possible in order to prevent any further damage to the tooth and alleviate any more aggravation from the sharp edge.
