Reshaping A Porcelain With Metal Crown

In July, I had root canal and porcelain with metal crowns done on tooth 7 & 8. Tooth 7 looked slanted and the dentist reshaped both teeth with a tool which left the bottoms rough, not smooth. An uncomfortable feeling. My tongue can move tooth 8. It is also sensitive. There is space between 8 & 9. She said it was semi-cemented and did not want to touch it (disturb it). The temps were coming off every 2 days. Could too much tooth have been removed during prep? Should new crowns be made without an added expense?

Answer: Reshaping porcelain with metal crowns

After adjusting porcelain, it must be thoroughly polished in order to regain a smooth texture.  This requires several polishing wheels and will never compare to its lab finish.  If the crowns were properly seated and cemented they should not be different lengths, slanted, nor should they have open contacts.  Open contacts can create food impactions as well as periodontal pocketing.  If they are only cemented temporarily, the dentist should be able to remove them.  I am worried that you may swallow or aspirate the crown on tooth #8, if it is in fact that loose.  It should not be any out of pocket expense for you or your insurance to remake the crowns if you are not happy.  Hopefully the dentist allowed to to approve of the size, shape, and color prior to cementing the crowns permanently.  Make an appointment and discuss your concerns and  treatment goals with your dentist so the crowns will allow you to be happy and proud of your smile.
