Jaw Pain one month after large filling

One month ago I lost a large amalgam filling in a lower back molar. It was replaced with a composite filling because there was not enough tooth left to use amalgam again. I needed 4 shots of Novocaine to numb the area and it took about an hour to fill the tooth. During the next few days I noticed that my bite was off and had some jaw pain so I returned to the dentist. The filling was too high so he filed it down. This brought instant relief but did not eliminate the periodic throbbing in my lower jaw (mostly at night). After about 5 days, a large bruise appeared on my lower jaw and during the next week (two weeks post filling) the throbbing in my continued. The throbbing and pain sometimes goes up to the joint in my jaw. I am able to take advil to eliminate the pain. I take one in the morning and one before bed and one in the middle of the day if and when needed. This immediately relieves the throbbing. I returned to the dentist after 3 weeks. He took xrays, tested the tooth by tapping, cold air and water, etc. The tooth appears to be fine. I have no pain or sensitivity in the tooth. He thinks my symptoms are from the Novocaine injections. I have gone to this dentist for 20 years and have never had a problem. I would like to know your opinion as to the cause of this problem, whether I should see a specialist and/or how long I should expect this to last. Also, as a precaution, I was prescribed an antibiotic but it didn't help.
