Answer: Root canal of molar

When performing root canal therapy in any tooth, it is important the dentist removes all the tissue to the apex, or ending of the tooth.  Most likely when he reached this point, is when you felt the discomfort.  This may indicate the tooth was still infected while performing the root canal.  By removing the tissue inside the tooth, you are removing the source of infection.  Usually the dentist will put medication, sodium hypochlorite, into the canal and place a temporary filling for several days to a week.  When you return, he will irrigate the tooth thoroughly, dry it completely and seal it.  The tooth should be cleaned out and canals are most likely already shaped. If he was worried about infection you would be placed on an antibiotic for 7-10 days before your next appointment.
