Answer: Still Having Pain

Each tooth extraction is different. Every individual heals at a different rate, considering age, health, home care, medications, and difficulty of extraction just to name a few.  Sometimes after an extraction, you can develop an infection and/or dry socket. This would cause additional pain as well as healing time.  Dry sockets can be very painful and usually develop a few days after the extraction takes place.  It occurs when the blood clot is removed from the extraction site and the bone is exposed to the environment.  When this happens, the socket must be treated with dry socket paste and a guaze packing by the treating dentist or surgeon.  Usually they will treat you several days in a row until the area begins to heal again.  Our age as well as our overall health also plays a very big role. If you are overall healthy and don't take prescription medications, you may tend to heal faster than someone with other present health complications, or is elderly.   It is important to continue to rinse with warm salt water every day until the socket has completely healed and closed.  Extractions sites heal from the inside out, so while it looks like it is closing, any food particles in your mouth will end up in that socket until it is completely closed over.  Infections can start with just a small piece of food that is not properly cleaned out.  Soreness and inflammation are completely normal and should each day begin to get better.  Continue taking oyur antibiotics until gone and rinse twice daily to avoid food and debris in the socket.  If it is not continuously improving, you may want to scheudle a follow-up visit with your dentist.
