Answer: Pain from erupting teeth
By
At six years old your son will be getting his first set of adult molars. These teeth push through the gum tissue and can be very painful. Many times we don't remember the teething stage of newborns and toddlers. The fevers and crying fits that accompany them are for good reason. Teeth force their way through the tissues during eruption which can be vey sore and painful, especially when eating. The tissues will move themselves out of the way and heal during normal eruption. The only time it needs to be addressed is when an impaction is present. This is very common in third molars. Usually over the counter medications such as Tylenol or Motrin are sufficient to mask the pain a child may experience during the eruption process. Warm salt water rinses are also soothing to the tissues. Monitor the tissues and his oral hygiene to ensure bacteria is under control and reduce risk of increased inflammation. Usually a dental visit is not necessary with normal tooth eruption, they will be checked when their bi-annual visit takes place.
